THE FIRST WAVE MOTION SYSTEM
Are you tired of playing the same old 2-meter static vertical system of water polo? Are you tired of getting beat by teams that have a size advantage over your team? Do you want to try something new that will make your team more difficult to defend? If you would like to add some movement and excitement to your game, then come and learn about a water polo motion system developed by one of the most successful coaches in USA water polo history, former Stanford University head coach, Dante Dettamanti. Coach Dettamanti has won championships at every level of water polo by thinking outside the box, and emphasizing different ways to play the game. This is a chance to get a step ahead on your opponents before next fall’s high school season.

The First Wave is an adoption of different ideas from other sports, especially the up-tempo style of basketball used by the Golden State Warriors, as well as playing systems like the Chip Kelly Oregon football system. By adapting these styles of play to the sport of water polo, Coach Dettamanti has come up with a new up-tempo style of game for water polo that everyone (men, women, boys, girls) can enjoy playing. This style will add to your team’s offense and give you another weapon in your offensive arsenal. It will help your team win games with speed and quickness and skill, rather than just with brute force and size. This system is multi-dimensional; as it can be played with or without a 2-meter center forward. The First Wave system offers a new approach to playing offense, defense and the extra-man, as well as a different perspective on coaching and conditioning a movement oriented system.

Topics Covered
• Presentation of the first wave motion system, a multi-dimensional system based on different ways to utilize the center forward to your advantage; or not using a center forward at all.
• The offense is based on creating more space in front of the goal for shooting and driving.
• You will learn how to teach and utilize the driving game as part of a constant motion offense.
• You will learn how to use a more effective pressing defense to pressure an opponent and create easy counterattack goals for your team.
• Introduction to a different way of playing the extra-man that will result in a dramatic increase in your 6 on 5 scoring percentage.
• Coaches will be introduced to a way of organizing practice and drills that will translate to better game performance.
• Introduction of the Stanford conditioning program that will enable your team to handle the rigors of a fast-paced up-tempo game.
• Introduction of possible new FINA water polo rules that will change the game.

ABOUT COACH DANTE DETTAMANTI
In 25 years at Stanford, his teams played in the NCAA Championship final game a total of 14 times, producing eight NCAA Championships and six second-place finishes. He became only the second collegiate coach in NCAA history to record over 600 career wins, and the only collegiate coach to win NCAA Championships in four different decades, the 70’s, 80’s 90’s, and 2000’s. His eight National championships tie the NCAA record for the most in NCAA history, along with the legendary Pete Cutino of Cal-Berkeley, and Jovan Vavic from USC. NCAA records include a .800 winning percentage at Stanford, a 52 game undefeated streak over a three year period in the 80’s, three back-to-back NCAA Championships (1980-81, 1985-86, 1993-94), and two undefeated seasons (28-0 in 1981 and 36-0 in 1985).

Dettamanti has not only produced winning teams and numerous All-American players, but also top international players. Fourteen of his players have played for the USA Olympic Team, including Olympic team standouts Jody Campbell (1980, 84, 88), Wolf Wigo (1996, 2000, 2004), Layne Beaubien (2004, 2008, 2012), and Tony Azevedo (2000, 2004, 2008, 2012, 2016).

Since retirement, Dettamanti has dedicated himself to promoting the game of water polo by developing an up-tempo style of play that will help increase the popularity of the sport around the world. He has presented coaches clinics and seminars in twelve foreign countries and numerous states, including California, Oregon, Hawaii, Washington and Illinois; as well as writing four manuals on coaching and playing water polo.
